  1. Take it to a place like Auto Zone or Advance and they will scan it and give you the diagnostic codes and what they mean.

What that light means that there is SOMETHING wrong with the car. It could be MANY MANY different things--some bad--and it could be something as simple as the gas cap not on correctly. You can also take it to a mechanic and they will scan it and turn the light off for you. It will continue to come on until you fix what is wrong with it.

  2. If you have an Autozone or Advance Auto near you, take the car there and they can scan you computer since it is ODBII and tell you what the problem is. If there is a component faliure, you will have to fix it before you can erase the code and cut the check engine light off, these places can check this but will not repair the problem, only cut the check engine light off if there are no problems .

  3. Yep, take it to a garage - any garage - for diagnosis. You don't need a dealer to do this.

  4. Engine Management Light  (EML)

Require an on board diagnostic plug in to identify fault

Local repairer should be able to do this for you or alternative Mazda dealer but that will be dearer.  Average non-dealer cost is about  ÃƒÂ‚£45 for the diagnostic and they should then be able to estimate the repair cost

  5. If you don't want to visit a mechanic, try buying one of these to determine what the problem is on your own:

  6. You need to read your handbook. It needs taking to a Mazda dealership for diagnostic investigation. Only they have the right equipment for this. Other garages rarely have equipment specific to a make of vehicle.

  7. That is your cars way of telling you there is something wrong. It shows up when the vehicles PCM or Powertrain Control Module says that a sensor is not within specifications or there is a problem withe the engine itself. It stores a DTC or Diagnostic Trouble Code to help the technician diagnose what is wrong with the vehicle and be able to fix it speedily and correctly the first time around.

I would highly suggest you take it to your local ASE CERTIFIED auto repair shop asap as it very well may affect gas mileage or become an even bigger problem. They should have the equipment needed to do your repair and at a MUCH cheaper cost than ANY dealership.

  8. Those here who make their living as a mechanic will hate me for answering your question honestly and directly...but here it goes anyway...

Nothing is probably wrong with the car at all.  The manufacturer set this thing to go off after a certain amount of miles so that you would have to go into the nearest garage to get them to turn it off (and thus pay for an electrical diagnostic test etc.).  This really ticks me off as most people will not inspect your car until the light is off and you pay them to run all of the diagnostics.  They'll most likely come at you with a list of sh*t that's "wrong" with the car.  Just tell them to turn off the check engine light, disconnect it if they have to and take it some place else to get it inspected.

The car manufacturers need to be shot for stuff like this.  The idea is that after ever "X" amount of miles you should pay for a bunch of routine maintenance on the car and that light is supposed to remind you to buy new belts, etc. (who can afford all of that unnecessary repair work)???  If they could, chances are that they would not be driving a Mazda from 04'.

How to turn off your check engine light

One of the biggest scams in the automotive/mechanic industry is the check engine light — this annoying disease that pops up and doesn’t care to ever leave your sight. A lot of the time, the light comes on because of some intermittent or rare problem, like a cylinder misfiring when your car was starting. So what’s the typical scenario: The light comes on, you go to your mechanic, he/she reads the code ($80), and then tell you “it could be anything, lets do a tune-up” ($150) — before you know it their suggesting new oil caps ($20) and timing belts ($$$).

I drive a 97 Integra, and every so often my check engine light comes on. It happens rarely, when I haven’t driven in a couple days, and I start the car without giving it any gas. Just after the car turns on, I feel a slight, baby rumble – cylinder misfired – check engine light comes on. The first time it happened, I went to the mechanic and they took $80 to read the code – crooks.

So now the real question, how do you shut it off? Most people think disconnecting the battery doesn’t work, and their right. It appears the cars computer system has some time delayed reset. Disconnect the positive terminal of the battery only, wait 10-15 minutes, re-connect and the check engine light should be off.

  9. You either need a tune up, or your smog contol needs work.

  10. Its bascially saying something is wrong with the engine, I recommend you take it to a Mazda garage and have them diagnose the problem

  11. what have you check all the fluids air filter fuel filter plugs belts coolant ....is a check engine light so first you check every thing.. if everything is full then have it scan at autozone or any shop but first check all the fluids

  12. It's the check engine light.  One of the systems monitored by the computer is returing a signal outside the parameters it expects to see, and it's warning you of the problem.

If you have a mechanic that can read the trouble codes go see him.  If not, go to the dealer to have it read so you will know exactly what the problem is, and have it fixed, and the light reset.
