The eventful afternoon at Nottinghamshire unfolds fate for two jockeys
The Nottinghamshire track could not have had a more eventful afternoon than the one the crowds, connections and their entries experienced on Sunday, 15th July. It witnessed the life endangering injury of a jockey along with another rider who successfully rode the 100th winner of his career the same evening.
The rider, Ian Popham, made a triumphant comeback after staying off scene since the last ten months after enduring a rather serious injury. He won the Mansfield Chad Handicap Hurdle on 15th July, 2012 at Southwell over two miles.
The proud trainer said: "That's our 100th winner and Ian Popham's first winner after being off for over 10 months, so it was special. It's fantastic and I'm delighted for him. Ian didn't look ring-rusty. He rode to orders, to sit third or fourth, which he did, and press on turning in. It's nice when it goes to plan."
Expecting the jockey to take time to land a race after recovery was only natural, but the unexpected twist of events did not make the connections wait for long.
Jockey, Brendan Powell was sent into the unconscious state of mind when falling from his seven-year-old bay gelding rise, The Lemonpie, in the Mansfield Jobs Today.Co.UK Handicap Chase at Southwell over two miles. Failing to sustain the tumble, the ride rolled over the ride, growing concern over his doubtful state.
The repercussions from the scandalous fall were not grave as after examination in the Queen’s Medical Centre, the son of trainer, Brendan Powell, was discharged.
"Thanks for all your concerned tweets, a bit sore and a bit of a headache, but nothing broken!! Thank God", commented the trainer.
The situation did not take a worse course than ‘a bit sore and a bit of a headache’.
It was on 13th July, 2012 at Newmarket in the Piper-Heidsieck E B F Fillies’ Handicap over seven furlongs that the rider took the Queen’s Free Verse to the winner’s enclosure after winning by the margin of 4 ½ lengths.
The Richard Hannon trained took over the competition of ten other contestants in companionship with jockey, Brendan Powell.
As it turned, one jockey got the prescription to rest for some while and the other went on his way to collect successes.
