Lewis and Clark did not explore the Louisiana Territory.  They explored the Northwest territory.  There were a number of explorers who did explore the area which became known later as the Louisiana purchase.  Most of these were Spanish or French military, trapper and traders.  Look'em up on Google.

  7. In 1803, after Jefferson had written his instructions for the team, the United States acquired a vast portion of the central North American continent from France in the Louisiana Purchase. The land purchase increased the importance of the expedition. Since the team would now be exploring United States lands, Lewis and Clark had the added duty of announcing American sovereignty in the new territory.
