The ferry from Whitehall terminal to Staten island is free of charge, right? so do i have to get a ticket?

i heard that the ferry rides from st george terminal to whitehall and from whitehall terminal to st george are free of charge. is that true? if so, do i have to purchase a ticket anyway? and from where in whitehall terminal do i get the ticket from? i am so very new to this all so the most detailed and helpful and understandable answer will get my 10points. please make your answers as clear as possible coz i have no idea how to make my way around any part of new york.

  1. You are correct that the ferries are free these days.  When a ferry is ready for boarding, large doors in the terminal building will open and you just walk through the doors and onto the ferry.  There are no tickets.

    It's as simple as it sounds.

The Stanten Island Ferry is totally free.  No tickets whatsoever.  You just go to the ferry terminal and wait until the gate opens.  The subway station is South Ferry for the 1 line.  The 1 train goes to Penn Station which has the subway, LIRR, Metro North, New Jersey Transit, and more.  The subways are an easy way to get around.  There are very easy maps, easy to understand.  You would need to purchase a metro card available in every station.  In the city, it is easiest to walk from the subway station.  Back to the 1 line: You have to be on the first five cars to get in. During rush hour, the ferries run every 15 minutes.  Normally it's 30 minutes.  Hope I helped!
