The fifth U.S. Collegiate Championship ends Georgia Tech’s 5 year wait
The fifth U.S. Collegiate Championship finally awarded the Georgia Tech a treat for their hard work. The team won the championship after 5 years that was held outside Atlanta at the Golf Club of Georgia on Tuesday.
For the past five years, the coach and the team had to walk past the trophy without claiming it. However, this time it happened otherwise. According to Bruce Heppler who is the Georgia Tech coach, this is an honour achieved after
1,300 days.
Taking a look at the leader board statistics, it seems that the Georgia Tech had been one hot competitor. The team is said to hold the lead in their hands after the first round when it carded a massive 17 under.
As far as the team’s overall performance goes, Georgia Tech scored a total of 836 at the end of the event with a 28 under. This was The Yellow Jacket’s 27 stroke victory over the team UCLA at the event held at the club's Lakeside
Course. The team scored a massive score of 280 at the last round that was recorded as an 8 under.
According to the coach, the event was played with massive efficiency. Heppler explains that the team played all the way in which had been consistent with every stroke. The coach explained that the venue of the 5th Collegiate Championship
is well liked by the team as they love the members and the place. He said that this place makes them want to play well.
The team was led by James White who scored an impressive 62 with a 10 under. The junior at Georgia Tech managed to carry a consistent game just like its team and thus marched towards victory. The junior played well at the last
round of the event and carded a 70 where the final score by the leader had been a 204 with a 12 under. The golfer broke one of the previous records after 4 strokes that offered a 5 shot lead over T.J. Vogel from team USC. Vogel played a rather low round at
the event and thus carded a 66.
The previous record thus handed James White his initial collegiate title along with his first win since high school. White had the opportunity to win two times earlier this year. The junior played the Players Championship and Palmetto
Championship which are regarded as two of the most top class amateur events.
According to white, it’s all about giving your best. The junior performed his last round with a 6 stroke lead over Steve Lim who resided from the team USC. White however faltered midst the game which happened at the 10th hole and
his lead compressed to 2 strokes. Lim charged in to grab the win but tripped at the 11th hole after he played an unattractive triple bogey. Lim fell from the bogey and White continued with his lead.
Apart from White, Richy Werenski carded one of the lowest scores of the team. Werenski ended at the fourth place tied who scored a low 67 with a 4 under. The tie was achieved with one of his fellow team mates Kyle Scott. Scott
ended his game after carding a 71. The 7th place at the leader board was achieved by J.T. Griffin and Paul Haley who stood with a one under which completed the Yellow Jackets five player quota in the top 10.
Apart from Georgia Tech, Georgia State ended the event at the 14th place that was attained after the team carded a 909 with a 45-over. This team was led by Alan Fowler, who played a 224 after an 8-over thus tying at the 39th place.
