no she was the only super filly racing...yes she the only filly in the race, but what a champion she is, she will be the champion 3 year old of the year, she beat all of the girls all year long, and now she has beaten the top boy horses in the longest race most of them will ever run....go girl-power.....

Yes Rags TO Riches was the only filly running in the Belmont stakes this year. She was the first filly to win the Belmont Stakes in 102 years. She was awesome!

Rags to Riches was the only filly in this year's Belmont Stakes, and the first filly to race in the Belmont since Siverbulletday finished 7th in 1999.

At the highest levels of racing, it's unusual for a filly to take on colts.  Even with the weight allowance (5 pounds) for fillies in races against colts, most fillies just aren't capable of beating colts.  

Economically, if you've got a good filly, your best chance of maximizing her earnings are running her where she has the best chance of winning:  against other fillies.  

From the standpoint of residual value as a broodmare, it's also best to run a filly against other fillies in order to maximize the chances of her earning "black type" in a graded stakes.  (In auction catalogue pages and stallion registers, winners of stakes are highlighted by putting their names in boldfaced type-- "black type," in the vernacular of horse sales.  The more black type in a mare's catalogue pedigree, the more marketable the offspring of that mare will be.)

Because the Jockey Club doesn't allow embryo transplant, the number of foals a given broodmare can produce is limited.  This has the effect of putting a cap on the value of a filly or mare as a broodmare.  Once she's reached her maximum value, which in the current market is $7-10 million, it doesn't matter what races she wins, she isn't going to become more valuable.  So all other factors being equal, if you have a filly or mare with a superalive pedigree (which Rags to Riches has), there's not benefit to racing her against colts.  If she can win a championship in her division just racing against other females, her value is likely topped out.

But oh, the fillies who can beat the boys are legendary.  Dahlia, Allez France, Urban Sea, Detroit, Makybe Diva are just some names that come to mind.  We just might see Rags to Riches take her place among these queens of the turf.

There is a reason for that...yes..A female horse is always run with female racehorses.  Mostly cause the colts are more spirited and handle the distance races better. Heres something everyone seems to ignore about Rags to Riches and her victory in the Belmont....Sloooooooooow pace all the way from the start rite to the home stretch sprint. A claiming nag could have kept up with the pack. Sorry ladys but its the truth.  Sourgrapes me all you want:-)

yes she was the only filly

and she was racing because she was the only filly that could handle the Belmont's long distance track. but the horse that just barly got second (Curlin) also handled the distance just the filly kept better pace through the race.

Yes - Rags to Riches (who I bet on and won) was the only filly that ran in the Belmont.

Of course you have to consider that she did carry five pounds less (120) then what the other horses had (125) - which may or may not have made the difference.

And this question will probably be debated for years to come!

OK Boys and girls, you've just learned another angle to add

to your handicapping skills. When there's only one filly

or mare running in a race with the guys, don't overlook the female

to come into the money (top three). I've seen this happen many times before. Perhaps the colts would rather run behind the filly

(especially during an estrous cycle) than pass her (seriously),

or maybe it's just a horse's way of showing disrespect for

her male competitors.
