the wick is as tall as the chimney and it's full of fluid

it also makes strange sounds that sound like air leaking out of a tire

  1. The wick is way too high. You gotta take all the cotton like stuff out, and get some tweezers and carefully pull the wick back, real carefully, if you pull it out, its hard to get back in.

    leave abut 1/8" sticking out.

  2. Put the crack pipe down and step away. The adjustment on your butane lighter is where you inject the butane. You can see the little nozzle where the butane goes, and around it you can see what looks like you could stick a slotted screwdriver on and turn it. Well you can, turn it in for lowering and out, don't, your already high enough

  3. TURN THE LITTLE s***w ON THE BOTTOM OF THE LIGHTER TO ADJUST THE WICK.

  4. We're talking the classic, with a wick which uses lighter fluid, right? If so, you have the wick too high. You can either trim the wick down a bit OR open the body, and pull out the wadding to get at the wick and pull it back down a little and then repack the wadding. Remember how the wadding came out so you can reverse the procedure to repack it correctly, as the wick makes S curves through the wadding. The noise you are hearing is simply the air flow through the holes in the chimney because of the large flame. Any fire will "roar" with sufficient air flow, such as with a chimney.
