Question:

The floor around my cat's litter box smells like urine!

I was gone for a week, and a friend took care of my cat. Now, my apartment reeks of urine. It gets a little better every evening when I come home and clean up the litter box, and open the windows, but I think that urine must have spilled around the litter box and absorbed into the floor around the box. My cat pees behind her, so it often leaks between the top and bottom of her enclosed litter box. I usually keep a paper towel in there to block it, and throw it away every day. How do I get the smell out of the floor? I've tried every cleaner I can think that might help.

  1. "Nature's Miracle Just For Cats Stain & Odor Remover" works really well.  I have an older kitty with arthritis who has difficulty getting in and out of the box, so i have several setups for her.  one being, a small disposable litter pan.  I put two large garbage bags on the floor and place the litter pan in the middle so when she misses the box, the garbage bags catch it.  Vinegar in a spray bottle also works very well.  It kills the amonia smell.

  2. clean it up with pinsole and get a new litter box duh!!!!

  3. In pet stores they sell a really nifty cleaner, For the life of me i cant remember it, but they do sell it. It works rather well. I am wondering if the pee got into the carpet or not.  If Not, then vinegar should work. I have also found, that hand soap (Dial) works really well.  May I make a suggestion? Try putting a piece of plastic, like a catch pan, something like a dish strainer pan under the litter box for extra protection. I wish I could remember the name of the stuff, but its on Petco under the urine removing stuff. Works for cats and dogs. It should cost somewhere around $11. I wish I could tell you the name, sorry, but good luck!!
