It was the political preference of industrial giants and nativists. None of the four groups listed seems to be a natural fit with 19th century liberalism.

    1900s liberalism tended toward protectionism (import tariffs, etc.), regulation of domestic industry (beginning with TR and accelerating when his cousin was president), and interventionism abroad. Groups A and B and D might all see this as advantageous.
