I am doing inclusion body purification. On the standard protocol, NaN3 is required. But it is toxic and the technician doesn't suggest me to use that. Is there any other chemicals I can use instead of NaN3? and what's the funciton of NaN3 in the inclusion body purifcation?

  1. Sodium azide is a blocker of electron transport (like cyanide) and is routinely used in many preparations to prevent the growth of bacteria in the sample. If the total preparation time is fairly short, and can be kept at 4ºC, then you don't need it. Unless you think there is any likelihood of accidently ingesting it, it should not be a significant problem at the concentrations usually used.
