The games that won the Premier League title for Manchester United – A look back
The summer transfer window is entering its last few weeks of activity and football gurus and pundits are making their predictions as each squad looks to shape up for the season ahead. With so much in discussion about what is going to happen next season,
maybe it is time to take a breather and walk through what has already happened.
Manchester United must still be relishing their record breaking victory. For as long as it lasts, the victory and the moments are for the fans and for everybody else associated with the club to keep. They were by far the most consistent team for the season.
They were strong in converting defeats in to draws, and draws in to wins.
Let us review some of the key games (whether won or lost) that won Manchester United their 19th Premier League title.
2010
Sunderland vs. Chelsea
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 seemed to be cruising and looked well on their way to defend their title. But they were in for a shock in their match against Sunderland. Chelsea lost 3-0 and put Man United in the running for the title.
2011
Blackpool vs. Man United
Blackpool had gained a lead of two goals by the end of the first half, but somehow Manchester United still looked like they will win. It was not really the vigour that they showed. But, it was more of the iron will that they presented to come back
from a hopeless situation to win the match. Manchester United looked all set to take the cup and made everybody else chase them.
Arsenal vs. New Castle
This was probably the match where http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Arsenal-c38429 lost the title race and Manchester won the Premier League. Arsenal were sitting comfortable after having scored 4 goals against a strong and determined Newcastle United. The game seemed over from Newcastle’s
point of view, but they came back from a deficit of two goals to end the match as a tie at 4-4.
Arsenal were shaken so badly and they went on to drop from position holders and down to a final fourth on the table. Arsenal’s loss was United’s gain and they looked more comfortable sitting on top of the table.
Manchester United vs. Manchester City
Call it luck, karma or skill, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Alex-c4752 Ferguson went to classify it as Old Trafford’s best goal ever.
Say what one may, it was a truly remarkable goal and the timing was even better. While Rooney basked in glory, he had his rivals from across the city put out of the challenge for the Premiership title. Now Manchester United looked destined to be winners.
The final score was two goals to United and a goal to Man City.
Manchester United vs. Chelsea
This was the most important match for the two teams in the Premier League. The League was coming to its final weeks of play and the top two teams, United and Chelsea, were divided by three points only. It was surely a title decider. Manchester United
were still in a comfortable position and won the league even if they had lost. But, as champions often do, they want to go out as winners. The Red Devils won the game 2-1 and hence, the title.
