Question:

The general ledger?

In double entry bookkeeping, if the balance of fixtures is carried down from the previous month in the general ledger, would the double entry be as follows:

Fixtures

DR - Balance b/d $4000

Bank

CR - Fixtures $4000

I am not sure how to record this in a double entry manner. My trial balance is not balancing and I think this may be one of the causes because I did not write the fixtures amount into the bank account.

  1. looks good to me

  2. You only record a transaction one time, when the fixtures were first purchased.  But, that wouldn't be why you weren't balancing, each of those accounts would be simply off by $4000.
