  1. A. It was the sea gateway to the Americas, to South Africa, and of course, a fast and (relatively) safe route to Asia. Those that exploited this (France, Portugal, Spain, and England) were also the most prosperous countries at those times.

    C. Westerners brought in foreign disease which the natives were not immune to...so even the most basic cold was totally overwhelming for their immune systems.
