WHY was he not wearing the correct safety gear on pit road

It was during a practice session and he was not actually a pit crew member. If you're going to walk around pit road, you need to pay attention. Never turn your back on a 200 mph race car.

I wondered the same thing.

I think ANY person over the wall should HAVE to have a helmet and fire suit.

If the IRL doesn't enforce it, I think each person who is over the wall should be smart enough to AT LEAST find a freaking helmet to put on!!

I'm in the construction trade and we can't even walk on to the property of a single story house with out our hardhats...

Durrnig practice helmets and firesuits are not required.  The thinking was that durring practice pit lane is relativity safe.  I think you will see those rules change.

I don't think he was supposed to be there, he was completely in her path, so it was pretty much his fault, I have no idea why he was standing out there.
