The height of hot-water boiler attached to a furnace is 5 1/2 ft.the circumference of the boiler is 48in.

If the metal is 1/1 in. thick, how many gallons will the boiler contain when full? (One gal.=231 cu.in.)

the ans is 50.gal

but i dont now the solution......

please tell the solution......

  1. Circumference= pi*d

    Volume=.7854*d^2*Height

    You have to find the interior diameter from the exterior circumference.

    So d = Circumference/pi

    Then subtract 2x the wall thickness to get the interior diameter.

    Convert the height to inches.

    Then use the Volume formula for the inside of the boiler.

    The volume in cubic inches/231 = gal.
