Yes, there were many killings of Jews or pogroms during European history. This is because Jews were generally better off a nd because Europe was so Christian and Jews were supposed to have killed Jesus. However, none of these killings were as horrific as the holocaust.

Jewish people originally came to Europe as accountants and scribes because the majority of them were well educated. After a while they learned, organized and became powerful businessmen and traders.

It was soon noticed that Jews were also very clannish they hired only Jews, only offered apprenticeships to Jews and always offered the best deals to fellow Jews.

Jews tended to be quite successful and wealthy, in times of economic hardships Jewish people always seem to fair better. This caused jealousy and envy among the masses.

Non Jewish political leaders always took advantage of the fact it's much easier to blame people who are different and better off than you are then find real solutions. So they blame the Jews. The people get angry and organize against them and forget their own troubles for a time.

Pretty much the same thing happened in pre WWII Germany once Hitler came into power. Remember Germany was in financial ruins after loosing WWI. Yet for some reason again Jewish people seemed to be better off than the typical German.
