  3. Synopsis:

Meyer's brilliant first novel for adults: a gripping story of love and betrayal in a future with the fate of humanity at stake. Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away. The earth has been invaded by a species that take over the minds of their human hosts while leaving their bodies intact, and most of humanity has succumbed. Wanderer, the invading soul who has been given Melanie's body, knew about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the too vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn't expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind. Melanie fills Wanderer's thoughts with visions of the man Melanie loves-Jared, a human who still lives in hiding. Unable to separate herself from her body's desires, Wanderer yearns for a man she's never met. Wanderer and Melanie, now unwilling allies, set off to search for the man they both love.

She braces herself for the onslaught of the last memory the body would have lived through and the stronger emotions of humans than her other host species.

The memory begins with running, fleeing from Seekers. At the memory of the Seekers, Wanderer screams, something she had not done before. Her body explains to her it is just a scream and Wanderer freezes, shocked that her body was still thinking, speaking to her. But the memory again pulls her into its grasp. Ahead is an empty elevator shaft and Melanie runs directly towards it and jumps, preferring death to capture. However, the fall is not high enough and she is simply hurt badly, not killed.

Wanderer again pulls free of the memory, but one last image appears, something that Melanie remembered before she passed out from the fall, the face of a man. Wanderer considers him beautiful and the moment she realizes she wants to keep looking at him, the memory disappears and her body says, "Mine". Wanderer again is stunned and rebukes the thought by stating that everything is hers and there is no one else with her. Kevin was relocated to another host and the host itself was disposed of. Wanderer is shocked, but the Seeker assures her that she would soon have full control. Wanderer tells her what she can: the host's name was Melanie Stryder, twenty years old and that she had been in Chicago looking for a cousin named Sharon. She had also left a note in the building where she was captured. As she spoke, she asked if they had found Sharon and Wanderer is horrified as she wasn't the one to formulate the question.
