I think it is very important.  One of the most important things to remember is to be sincere and honest.

People with communication difficulties have trouble expressing their thoughts, feelings, wants and needs, which can be impacted by peoples lack of understanding or ignorance to the nature or cause of the persons communication problems.

Thus causing frustration and isolation if their communication problems are severe enough, especially so if the person has

an intellectual impairment.

How we can help is learn about the nature or cause of the communication problems, also learn how the person best communicates, and the type of communication devices they use, and how it works.

Be patient and give them time to indicate what they maybe saying, never try to second guess what they are trying to say, as this will cause frustration.

Look for visual signs or indicators of a person looking disinterested, withdrawn, in not wanting to interact, children who act out may actually having trouble communicating their wants and needs.

Don't be afraid to ask them to repeat themselves, if your having difficulty understanding them.

Other tips are to are to especially hearing impaired;

Gain attention first of the person

Be on the same level (face to face)

Avoid background noise whenever possible

Speak slowly and clearly but don't shout

Use simple language

Be understanding

Repeat and rephrase as required

For those with a intellectual impairment, learn Makaton sign language, which is system of communication based on a combination of spoken words, sign language vocabulary, and graphic symbols.

Board marker – which uses Picture Communication Symbols, allowing for the person to communicate via pictures.
