  1. by parents setting an example for them!

  2. In my classroom of fours I have often heard statements that not only put a woman or man in a specific role but also leaves one dominate in the words used. I am very quickly to point out that the child has his opinion about that specific idea however not all people do. Nor do all his classmates. It seems each year a child will mention that boys don't wear pink shirts. I say oh yes many men and boys wear pink shirts. Very often a child will say, "Yeah my Dad does." My co-teachers and I often express how nice a child looks if another is making a statement about that child's clothes. Such as a little girl asking a classmate why she isn't in a pretty dress. We find something positive to say about the little girl and it is interesting to see a change in the others attitude. Basically it is teaching by example. Even if it is different than what is taught at home the children learn that it is the way of the classroom.

  3. It starts at home from the day they born, children will imitate what they see at home. I taught my son to treat people the way he would want to be treated, unfortunately there are some parents out there who really dont care.

  4. You must educate them and show them examples of diversity on all levels, culture, family style, race, For example what is served in your home on holidays vrs other countrys. Cultural differences is a good place to start even when they are very small. There are lots of videos out there about different cultures. Have fun I find this a very fun thing to do with kids and have raised all mine now and they are open minded and non judgemental individuals. They have empathy in many cases because there minds aren't clouded by judement but an understanding that everyone is like a computer. We are programed from the time we are small to have responses. The way someone responds to something we say is a direct link to there program. If we understand this when in a communication we can understand that they may respond in a way we don't understand because we don't know their computer language and programs set up,  The one great thing is that all programs can be changed so if there are faulty ones a good education can help change the program. Good luck and best wishes
