Question:

The isles of Scilly?

I wondered if anyone knew of a place to stay for a week in October? A small flat or cottage, cheap and not 5* fancy! Its for two adults and one small dog.

Is public transport good on the island?

Are there many shops? Cafes etc?

Is the cost of living expensive compared to mainland UK?

If you have been there, what attractions or beaches would you recommend I see / visit?

Will it be warm in October? Or rainy???

  2. The Isles need to make a living from the short tourist season. Nothing is cheap. And because the living is precarious the resident population turn into a pack of avaricious wolves to earn from the visitor their meagre living. It really is a them and us society, and not at all pleasant for the casual visitor. All high prices are blamed on the ferry charges of course and there's no arguing with that. But if you have swallowed the TV series on the Isles, think again, it was a work of imaginative fiction. Their radiostation for example? One man's hobby.

  3. My youngest Daughter lives on Tresco, for half of the year,(Lake district for the other half) Ther isn't much to do, except admire the gorgeous scenery, I'm afraid. As for shops, there's only ONE small general stores, which is extremely expensive.

Your best bet would be the main Island of St Mary's, which has a bit more to do on it, but even that's not exactly popping, and unless you're well into your 60's, you might be a tad bored.

  4. OMG, Have a blast I'd like to go in suitcase.

Just sit at the beach and have martini's.

    I believe in Angels!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. There isn't much to do on the Isles of Scilly to be honest. I went there on a daytrip from Penzance and that was enough. The weather is mainly Gulf Stream and so it is very warm and sunny when the pressure is high, cold and miserable when the pressure is low.

There are not many shops on the islands and most sell sailing equipment. The beach at St Mary's is fab, it's like the south of France if you get the right weather.

To be honest with you, you would be better off staying on the mainland and tripping over there for a day. There is a fab place to stay at Cape Cornwall called Nanpean Barns (they have a website), I have stayed there many times and they allow dogs. There are seals in the bay and I usually get the whole beach there to myself. It's a bit of a walk, but well worth it.

I have stayed at Nanpean in October and enjoyed fab weather all week and it's only a short drive from Penzance to get the ferry or Helicopter to the Scilly Isles.
