The journey of Scott Rand – from lorry driver to the oche of darts
He was not and will not play darts for the trophy, he will not be participating in the event to list his name in the glory of darts.
Even if any of the above mentioned options does work out, they are definitely not the prime agenda of the English darts player, Scott Rand, who has been trying to make a career in the game of darts to quit his job as a lorry worker.
The 36-year-old player from Coventry has been looking to avail every other opportunity that can help in changing his lifestyle.
In the form of darts, he has grabbed hold of the perfect jackpot for himself that can help him in switching his career.
It might be quite surprising for many but his luck sponsored entry in the game cannot be termed as the reason for the present state of game he has been able to develop.
This can be vindicated from the fact that in the last year tournament held in Doncaster, Rand was able to partly realise his dream by securing the second position in the event.
Alongside, he bagged a runner-up prize of 15,000 pounds that matters and is of greater importance to Rand.
He failed to reach the 60k mark after he was defeated by Kevin Painter in the finale of the event. However, during his journey in the event his performance was simply par excellence.
No other reason, other than the fact that he was able to defeat strong and veteran players like James Wade and Raymond van Barneveld, is sufficient to testify the dexterity he has gained in the game within such a short span of time.
"My main motivation isn't to win the World Championship as my motivation is to do well enough to give up working for a living and play darts for a living," he said in one of his interviews he gave to Skysports.com
However, his key focus is still concentrated on the money he can make from the game.
According to Rand, if he is able to earn an annual wage with the help of this game, then from the following year, he will have the opportunity to explore other frontiers for himself.
On the other hand, it is also important to consider the tough routine he has to go through in order to reach near enough to clinch his dream of becoming affluent at this game.
With 50 hours of job work per week, followed by timings allocated for darts, pets, children and wife, all make the entire day hectic to further invest time in any other activity.
Another important point to mention is that in terms of performance, when compared with the number of hours attributed to practice, he is quite commendable.
He must be appreciated in accordance with the achievements he has been able to make in his career so far.
On the flip side, there is a major argument that seems to be brewing, especially related to the attitude and approach Rand has towards the game.
Experts and darts pundits believe that this behavioural approach has its own pros and cons.
They believe that, with such an approach, the scope of darts will definitely increase encouraging young people to enter the game, even if they are willing to gamble their luck for satisfying their financial requirements.
At the same time, this will transform the visage of the game from a level of interest to the mere satisfaction and acquisition of economic necessities.
In the long run, it is being feared that this would tarnish the image of the game.
Even though the thought remains quite far-fetched, the fate of Scott Rand at the oche of Alexandra Palace will serve as a key source of interest for all youngsters willing to make their future in darts.
