1. Undigested food

2. Metabolic wastes

3. Blood cells

4. Platelets

If you also could give an understandable paragraph about why they do so that would be great. ;)

[If I said 1, would I be correct?]

  1. the kidneys are responsible for excreting the nitrogenous and other excretory  substances from the body...it also excretes toxic substances from the body....kidneys also filter blood...as blood cells(RBCs and WBCs) and platelets are part of blood they are also filtered ...so some  metabolic wastes(nitrogenous and toxic) and blood (including cell and platelets) are filtered by kidney....if u are aware of the histology of kidney u must be knowing that kidneys are made up of small units called nephrons and nephrons are made up of these parts...bowman's capscule and glomerulus and urinary tubules...so remember that as blood flows thru glomerular capallaries, water and all substances plasma except blood corpuscles and plasma proteins filter out of blood into the bowman's capscule...since undigested food is  in the form of a bigger mass , it cannot be filtered by the fine membranes of glomerulus ...so they are excreted in faeces....and the substances which  can pass thru glomerular membrane are excreted in urine......

  2. I would say 2.

The basic functions of a kidney:

    1. Regulation of extracellular fluid volume. The kidneys work to ensure an adequate quantity of plasma to keep blood flowing to vital organs.

    2. Regulation of osmolarity. The kidneys help keep extracellular fluid from becoming too dilute or concentrated with respect to the solutes carried in the fluid.

    3. Regulation of ion concentrations. The kidneys are responsible for maintaining relatively constant levels of key ions including sodium, potassium and calcium.

    4. Regulation of pH. The kidneys prevent blood plasma from becoming too acidic or basic by regulating ions.

    5. Excretion of wastes and toxins. The kidneys filter out a variety of water-soluble waste products and environmental toxins into the urine for excretion.

    6. Production of hormones. The kidneys produce erthryopoietin, which stimulates red blood cell synthesis, and renin, which helps control salt and water balance and blood pressure. They are also involved in regulating plasma calcium and glucose levels.

  3. Main Functions of the Kidney are

    1-Excretion of waste products

The kidneys excrete a variety of waste products produced by metabolism, including the nitrogenous wastes: urea (from protein catabolism) and uric acid (from nucleic acid metabolism) and water.

    2-Homeostasis

The kidney is one of the major organs involved in whole-body homeostasis. Among its homeostatic functions are acid-base balance, regulation of electrolyte concentrations, control of blood volume, and regulation of blood pressure. The kidneys accomplish these homeostatic functions independently and through coordination with other organs, particularly those of the endocrine system. The kidney communicates with these organs through hormones secreted into the bloodstream.

    a)Acid-base balance

    b)Blood pressure

    c)Renin-angiotensin system

    d)Plasma volume

    3-Hormone secretion

Renal failure or kidney failure is a situation in which the kidneys fail to function adequately.

Biochemically, it is typically detected by an elevated serum creatinine. In the science of physiology, renal failure is described as a decrease in the glomerular filtration rate. When the kidneys malfunction, problems frequently encountered are abnormal fluid levels in the body, deranged acid levels, abnormal levels of potassium, calcium, phosphate, hematuria (blood in the urine) and (in the longer term) anemia. Long-term kidney problems have significant repercussions on other diseases, such as cardiovascular disease.

  4. 2. Metabolic wastes

Undigested food doesn't get into the blood.
