approach. screaming and playing stupid mind games with recruits does not make a better fighting man. mentoring is the key because thru mentorship the recruits would want to emulate their drill instructors in contrast to despising them. teaching instead of screaming is a better way of learning. as for the mind games, one recruit in our platoon got sick. he was rushed to sickbay, an hour later our drill instructor told us he died. the platoon was very upset and emotional. an hour later he told us he lied. what was the lesson he was trying to teach?

  1. I'm not gonna laugh you out like the rest of the vets here, but unless you have a degree in military operations I don't think you have the slightest idea what you are talking about. Of course mentoring might do more good with regards to school sports and team cohesion exercises, that doesn't have the slightest thing to do with combat. And this isn't just the Marine way of doing it, Navy BUD/S training is extremely rigorous, as well as all the other branches and military units that are likely to see combat.

But as far as the branches are concerned, every Marine is a combatant, so every Marine needs a certain degree of combat prowess. That's why they mess with recruits minds so much, it's because everyone has a chance of seeing combat. Other branches have rate's or MOS that'll never see combat, so the worst they have to go through is basic. The whole point of the screaming and mind games is to better acquaint the Marines with the harsh realities of combat and war. If you can't handle the screaming and hardships of basic training, there's no way in h**l you would last too long in combat. They want every Marine to be a gung ho individual, not a stupid Rambo, but someone capable of dealing with the stress and completing the mission, regardless of what happens.

Telling your platoon that one of your own died was just a way of testing you, to see if you'd crack or not. Telling you that someone died is one thing, to actually see someone die in front of your own eye's is another. If you can't move on because of a phrase of words, then your not going to fare too well when the **** hits the fan and your in the middle of it. In actual combat, they would expect you to carry on even if your best friend died right next to you. To see these things and experience them is unnatural, something you would never be apart of or expect otherwise. Most people would shut down, but the Marines train you hard because they expect you to overcome these obstacles that would stop a normal person in their tracks. You can prepare a sports team because you can practice every aspect of the game, but you can't prepare a man to take another mans life. You can only prepare someone to be a mentally hardened individual, train them to master the weapons at their disposal, and hope that they will be able to follow through when the time calls for it.

In BUD/S, they make candidates swim in ice cold water, make them perform physical tasks for days on end without sleep, and play mind games like there's no tomorrow. It's not supposed to build muscle or endurance, and it's not supposed to make them feel better about themselves, it's supposed to test their physical and mental limits. They do these things to find out whether or not they would be capable for the actual rigors of combat.

  2. Well uhm if you havent noticed its possible that you can die while in the Military so by him doing that it made you realise that .. holy c**p my friend just died... it made it sink in and made you realize reality.

Plus he had fun doing it hahahaha.

Look if you cant hack the Marines, and obiously you cant... otherwise you wouldnt be complaining about everything, s***w up and get discharged if you're that miserable, but they'll make your life a living h**l.

As far as them yelling at you all the time, its for pressure, how you react under pressure, because guess what?!!?!? The enemy isnt going to look at you and say... Ok, now im going to pull out my weapon and kill you, you have 30 seconds.

So YES yelling at you all the time does make you a better fighter and prepares you for what its like. Because when your in combat everything isnt cookies and cream.. everyone is yelling, rounds are going off, you have to think on your feet and that is what they teach you.

If you dont understand that by now I dont no why you're a Marine.

Alright, I just read some of your other questions.. DUDE WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM???

Marine boot camp is SUPPOSED to be hard! The Marines are the BEST of the BEST for a friggin reason!!! You couldnt hack it because you were weak! Deal with it! Stop asking these retarded questions, its pathedic!!!!

Dont be agry at the corps, be angry at yourself for failing and trying to scam your way through. Cheating on obs courses!! Youve got to be kidding me... Get a life!

  3. Yeah, and, now, let's all hold hands and sing together:  "What the world needs now is love sweet love".

    Wuss!!!

  4. He was probably trying to teach you that you'd best be prepared to lose a buddy in a combat situation. Everybody being "upset and emotional" doesn't do anybody a d**n bit of good when things are going against you. In fact, I'd expect that it would get even more people killed. While you're busy emoting in your anguish, the enemy is still trying to kill you.

DI's and the Marine Corps have been doing their job for a long time. I'll trust their judgement over a boot any day as to the best way to train Marines.

  5. LOOK Boot camps is to get you ready to be a man that mentorship only applies to people who are in HIgh school we want people to come out of boot camp like men not boys

  6. First; This is a statement, not a question!  Second; The use of Drill Instructors to teach boots has served the U.S.M.C. well since before the War Between the States.  It is not likely to change based upon your vast insight into military affairs.  Third; Apparently nobody bothered to inform you or the members of your platoon that the chief task of the Drill Instructor is to induce stress into your training environment so you can learn how to focus on the training objectives.  Your task is to keep your eyes and ears open as well as keeping your mouth shut so the Drill Instructor can properly train you how not to die!

  7. The Marines are over 225 years old, i think they know how to make the best soldiers since they are the best.  They send men into combat first, before any other branch of the military.  What ever training tool they use, is to make you a better soldier.  Able to handle a bad situation and still complete your mission.

Maybe you should try a nice little college instead.

  8. If you want that approach, you should join another branch of the military.  I think they actually use a lot more of the team-building mentorship stuff in the Army and Air Force than they do in the Marines.

Being a Marine is just a different breed.  The extra tough mind games are all part of that, and some thrive on this "hazing" approach, similar to people who want to join exclusive secret societies such as fraternities, brotherhood/lodge type organiations, and dare I say it, even gangs.

Marines have to be tougher and different from other branches because of the tasks they are expected to do, and even because of the politics and logistics of how their branch interacts with other branches (ride on Navy ships but function on land/sea/air.  It's not for sissies, or even for people who aren't highly motivated to play the mind games and jump through the necessary hoops to join.

If you don't get that, then apparently the Marines is not your thing, which is ok, but don't expect them to change the rules and the system just for you or anybody else.

  9. Yeah, I can see it now...

"OK, guys, there is an enemy machine gun over there and I really want several of you to try to take it out.  Most of you will probably get killed, but I know you can do it if you just believe in yourselves!..."

Uh-huh, that would work out just great.
