Laptops are very convenient and mobile. However I would suggest the desktop as it does not have overheating problems, battery problems, and also its a little easier for things like games etc.

I prefer laptops

We end up paying more for inferior tech, but i enjoy the challenge of getting better numbers and higher clocks on something with so tight a thermal budget.  Plus i like to be able to unhook from a wall and go places pretty easily if i need/want to.

Desktops are always going to be more powerful than laptops, but have you ever seen someone lugging around a 112lb desktop just to go hang out in the park for a while and enjoy an afternoon?

If you like portability and ability to move around - laptop.

If you like better graphics, enhanced memory, and greater speed - desktop.

Preference.
