  1. It is a German name, formed from the personal name Diel or Tiel and Thilo.

  2. the folks by that name in my chart were Pennsylvania Dutch -- low country Germans.

  3. I googled it and found this:

"First found in Frankfurt (Germany), where the name came from humble beginnings but gained a significant reputation for its contribution to the emerging mediaeval society."

    From the website: http://www.houseofnames.com/xq/asp.fc/qx...

It gives quite a bit of information (of course, they are trying to sell stuff! DON'T BUY!)

The German word for German is "Deutch", which is very similar in sound to "Dutch".  The Dutch language is very close to the German language, so many people confuse the two languages/peoples.

    From the website: http://www.ancestry.com/facts/Diehl-fami...

It states that the name Diehl comes from German:

German: from the personal name Diel, Tiel, from Thilo, a pet form of a personal name beginning with Diet-, as for example Dietrich.

    It further states:

German: from the Germanic personal name Tederich (Theudoricus), composed of the elements theud ‘people’, ‘race’ + ric ‘power(ful)’, ‘rich’. This surname is common throughout central and eastern Europe, particularly in the western Slavic countries. The forename occurs in a wide variety of local forms, especially in northern Germany. It is cognate with Dutch Diederik (see Dederick).

So, back to the Dutch!  They are all tied in together...
