I just played a criket match and the opposition only had 8 players. I had to field for them and they had 3 people go to bat twice. Is this allowed? I am certain it's not but I just want to make sure.

  1. No its not allowed. In fact match is not allowed without the team of team of 11 players at least.

  2. This is what the Laws of Cricket say:

Firstly, the number of players: Law 1 (1) Number of players: A match is played between two sides, each of 11 players, one of whom shall be captain.  By agreement a match may be played between sides of more or less than 11 players, but not more than 11 players may field at any time.

Secondly, the batsman leaving the crease. Law 2 (9): A batsman may retire at any time during his innings.  The umpires, before allowing play to proceed, shall be informed of the reason for a batsman retiring.

    (a) If a batsman retires because of illness, injury, or any other unavoidable cause, he is entitled to resume his innings subject to (c) below.  If for any reason he does not do so, his innings is to be recorded as "Retired - not out".

    (b) If a batsman retires for any reason other than as in (a) above, he may resume his innings only with the consent of the opposing captain.  If for any reason he does not resume his innings it is to be recorded as "Retired - out".

    (c) If after retiring a batsman resumes his innings, it shall only be at the fall of a wicket or the retirement of another batsman.

Thirdly, completion of innings: Law 12 (3) Completed Innings.

A side's innings is to be considered as completed if:

    (a) The side is all out, or

    (b) At the fall of a wicket, further balls remain to be bowled, but no further batsman is available to come in

So in answer to your question, the 3 batsmen are not allowed to bat again in the same innings if they have already been dismissed. They may bat a second time if they have retired, but a dismissal means they can take no further part in that innings.

  3. Strictly speaking, within the laws of the game it is not allowed. However, it would probably be acceptable so long as the game is a friendly or it is not in a league or cup competition AND, most importantly, the two captains agree to it.

  4. No. Its not allowed.

If opposition peopel have less people that does not mean some of them get chance twice. It is as good as they are absent.

In the scorecard you can mark them absent.

If this is allowed then teams will tend to send their tailenders away and their frontline batsmen will take 2 or more batting That is not fair. Only one chance for each batsman.

  5. No.  It is not allowed as per Laws of Cricket.  However, if you are playing the game for academic interest you need not to strictly go by rules.

  6. No. It doesn't even have to abide with the laws of cricket to not be allowed. It means that the match is not a fair one. Simple as that.
