  1. No doubt about it, you have a bug problem. It could be slugs, or beetle type bugs. A natural type of insecticide good against all bugs and that we use at home is dish soap and water. mix and keep in a spray bottle. And use every few days.  


  2. sounds to me like vine weevil. They hide in the soil all day and come out to feed at night. The best way to deal with them is with nematodes, available from garden centers. they will adise you as to their use. No chemicals either.
