The lighter side of golf, off the fairways
Everybody knows what happens on the fairways, with all the coverage the tournaments get and the fans following every shot, there is little that is missed during a tournament.
However, what happens when the players are off the fairways is something only a few would know about. Here are some incidents that showcase the lighter side of golf.
Many a times baggage tends to get mixed up on the luggage section of the airport due to similar looking bags. Golf bags are no exception to such incidents.
Angel Cabrera and Nick Watney came to San Francisco to participate in the U.S Open. Both players arrived at the airport at the same time but on different flights.
Cabrera waited for his oversized bag to show up on the luggage section, but no avail. The only bag lying there was Watney’s bag.
Cabrera then made some phone calls and tried to get in touch with Watney who had already headed out of the airport. Cabrera’s baggage was in the trunk of the car that Watney was in.
On another occasion, Padraig Harrington demonstrated that he has a unique relationship with the media, in particular the Irish Media.
During an interview with Glen Allen, who works for the Irish Radio Station RTE, after the interview finished, Harrington started making conversation with Allen. He asked Allen if he had lost his sunglasses.
Allen lowered his shoulders and replied that in fact he did lose his sunglasses. Moreover, he did not know where to look for them.
With a smile on his face, the three-time major champion replied, ''They're in my locker; you left them behind the other day''.
Another comical incident occurred during the British Open. The tournament has a huge scoreboard in the centre of the press.
A group of volunteers, mostly women in their early twenties, move ladders side to side to update the score after every hole.
With many players still on the course, Press officers made an announcement on the intercom after Adam Scott had carded a 67, one shot away from the lead, ''Can we see a show of hands for Adam Scott?''
All six women posting results on the score board raised their hands.
