C.  It is the presence of the Y chromosome.  The Y chromosome contains a gene, known as the SRY gene, that lets the body know to differentiate the genetalia into male organs.  If the fertiziled egg gets an X from the sperm, then there is an absence of the SRY gene, which cause the genetalia to become that of a female.
