  1. Yes, that's G Major.

    What you have is one octave, which is useful. You could consider playing around with a 4-string pattern which is about 1 1/2 octaves, so it's not a complete number of octaves, but is better for general improvising rather than scale practice.

    D|- 2 - 4 5

    A|- 2 3 - 5
