  1. c

  2. Actually, everyone in the Basque region speaks Spanish as a first language.  They teach Euskara in the schools, and many people USE it, but Spanish is STILL the first language, there, as in all of Spain.

And the people there have been trying to get separated from Spain (and France, as well, btw in the Basque region of France, which matches up with Spain, just further to the North) since before Euskara was legal to speak in the region, since before it was ILLEGAL to use it in the region, I believe, since before Spain was one country.  The Basques are of an independent nature which goes back waaaaaaaaay further than any of your choices

And, that is homework, so, YOU get to figure out the actual answer that your teacher is looking for.

  4. People from Euskadi base their claims of independence because of:

    1) Linguistic facts: About 500.000 (10% of the whole population) speaks euskara as their first language, and it is considered the historical language of the territory.

    2) Cultural facts: Basque culture is very differentiated to the spanish, it has its own manners, cuisine, dress and way of life.

    3) Historical facts: Basque people settled on northern Spain and southern France a lot of centuries ago. Along the history, they have preserved their national unity, even being part of Spanish and French States.

    4) Economical facts: Euskadi, due to the strong industrial growth at the beggining of the XX century, have a stronger economy than Spain, and basques often consider Spain as a heavy load.

Sue is wrong: Actually, spanish language is not the first language of everyone in Spain. In Catalonia, more than the half of the people speaks catalan as their first language. In my region, "la Franja" (the strip, eastern Aragon), the local variety of catalan is spoken as a mother tongue by almost the 80% of the population.
