The making or breaking of Steve Stricker
Steve Stricker is wallowing in the dark after a disastrous performance at the Ryder Cup this season that cost Team USA the Cup for the second consecutive time in four years.
While Olazabal’s lads have plenty to cheer about with a stunning final day performance that made it seem everything fell into place for them, Steve Stricker feels sorely responsible for the loss.
''I feel a lot of responsibility there for not winning a point,” Stricker was quoted saying Tuesday. ''The first week or two it wasn't much fun just trying to sleep, to tell you the truth. But yeah, that one hurts, and I think it still hurts a lot of us
just because of how it all played out''.
Stricker and Woods were, after all, the two senior players on the team, with some very powerful putting between them.
Borrowing from Spidey, with great power comes great responsibility. Stricker lost his disappointing singles match to German Martin Kaymer.
It was harrowing, really, to see the seasoned Edgerton resident struggle to get an up-and-down from a basic chip off the 17th hole. His playing partner was equally painful to watch, losing just about as many points as Stricker did.
The only thing that matters by the end of the day, however, is how a player, after a particularly poor performance, can pick himself back up.
Tiger Woods, since that fateful performance, has made many more millions (especially noteworthy being Northwestern Mutual’s presenting sponsorship for the TW Foundation’s World Challenge).
Stricker has hot done anything noteworthy since, which, if kept up, could hurt his game irreparably.
Astonishingly enough, Stricker is no stranger to failure. For a man whose credo has always been that there are plenty of failures in golf, he certainly is not acting the part.
Moreover, this is not the first time he has let himself down. He was Comeback Player of the Year, twice, and he has been world no. 2 once already.
It is time he pulled his act together and changed bearings. The course he is currently on will only serve to take him out of the top-30 by New Years.
Get back into the saddle man!
