I am working towards my bachelors in childhood education to be a elementary teacher in new york city and I am aware that it is madatory to receive a masters degree. However, I am curious if I must get my masters degree in education, or can I choose to major in anything (i.e. english)? Thank you!

  1. I think under the guidelines of the NCLB act this is pretty uniform for each state (although I am not 100% sure).  From what I understand you do not need to get a degree in education but it must be in your content area. So, if you are an English teacher it can be an education degree, or English (it can be content specific - children's lit, etc.).  Your best bet would be to check the state's DOE web site.  There shold be some info there.  Another option would be to check a college/university web site.  Chances are they have a FAQ page, and I am willing to bet this is one of them.  Good luck!
