The match between Durham and Yorkshire ends in a draw: County Championship Division One
The washed out first day of the County Championship Division One match between Durham and Yorkshire saw both teams settle for a draw in the end, at the Riverside Ground, Chester-le-Street in England, on Tuesday, June 21, 2011.
Durham were in control of the game on the second and third day’s play, but a superb unbeaten century from the Yorkshire’s captain, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Andrew-Gale-c1039, secured the match for the visitors.
The rain on the first day suggested that the pitch might have some moisture beneath it. This forced the home team’s skipper, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Phil-Mustard-c2183, to bowl first. His bowlers justified the decision by bowling the opposition out for just 185 runs in their first outing.
The innings started off in a terrible way for the Yorkshire team, as none of their top-order batsmen were able to make an impression. The team lost six wickets for just 90 runs on the board and looked in a very bad position.
However, there was some resistance from the lower-order players, Jonny Bairstow and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Yorkshire-c867 ended up with 185 runs.
Former England’s pacers, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/G-Onions-c1449, enjoyed the bowling friendly conditions and swung the ball with good control. Both took three wickets each in the innings, causing a lot of problems for the opposition’s batsmen.
Durham suffered a couple of early loses, as their openers, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Will-Smith-c2794, were unable to make an impression. They were sent back to the hut after adding five and 13 runs to the total.
A quick-fire 55 off just 43 deliveries from http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Dale-Benkenstein-c1302, who only scored five for his team, leaving the hosts at
91/4.
However, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Durham-c782. He top scored the innings with 108 runs, guiding the team’s total to 408.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Steven-Patterson-c2585 managed to trouble the Durham batsmen and picked up three wickets in the innings.
Yorkshire needed to survive one complete day to save the match, which they managed to do successfully in the end. Opening batsman, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Gary-Simon-Ballance-c58564 also scored an unbeaten 53 in the end. However, the star
of the show was Gale, who collected 101 runs and remained unbeaten.
Harmison took one wicket in the second innings and failed to cause a lot of issues for the batsmen.
