Question:

The melting places in the Earth?

Ive heard that places in America and other countries are melting away. I heard this from Yahoo's features. Do you think it is true? How is it even possible! Ive also heard this is cause by global warming. When do you think this might even happen?

  1. small pacific islands will melt entirely in the next few decades.

and many ice sheets are melting every single day, by acres.

haven't you heard of the polar bears that are dying because of the land mass shrinkage?

  2. It's probably very real..

Sure the Earth goes through cycles, but..now the next cycle the Earth goes through is going to have the hundreds of millions of tons of CO2 in the atmosphere...

Some say it's absorbed through the natural growth of vegetation....sure it is, but now we are releasing it faster than it is absorbed, and we are still clearing land and cutting down whole forests..(also by chance the very things that create the oxygen we "need")

And when the oceans warm a little the millions of tons of methane below them will escape, another greenhouse gas...

We being so arrogant will not do anything significant to prevent it, when the cycle gets to the runaway stage we will be "unable" to do anything to stop it

Now just figure out this "simple" problem if you really believe CO2 does not retain the heat....

We know Venus's atmosphere is mostly CO2, and the temperature of Venus is "hotter" than Mercury....

Yet Venus is almost twice as far from the sun as Mercury is, can anyone reason why? Other than the "greenhouse" atmosphere?

If you can, would you post it for us here please ?

  3. Don't believe those lies. Scientists prove that the earth is actually cooling a bit right now, and the earth has been going through heating and cooling cycles since centuries ago.

  4. yes the earth is melting. it melted a long time ago too, and a big part of earth melted off into the surrounding of the earth's atmosphere. they call it the moon now! global warming is a hoax!

  5. We are seeing some reduction in several glaciers.

There is a problem in deciding what exactly is happening. Some glaciers are having more ice fall off their surfaces, great volumes of ice falling for instance off the Klina Klina Glacier in British Columbia.

It is observed that there is more snow, and more rain falling on the mountains around that glacier.

Does this mean the glacier is melting?

Only partly. There is more total ice in the glacier, but also more water, making it easier for it to slide toward the Pacific inlet. It could go on gaining snow and losing it with no assured way to know that it is diminishing as a whole.

  6. glaciers are melting.  not "places".

you could be more careful about what you read.

    why are they melting?

    because it's getting warmer.

    why is it getting warmer?

    because of increased CO2 levels.

    why does CO2 cause warming?

    <<The Greenhouse Effect

The greenhouse effect itself occurs when short-wave solar radiation (which is not impeded by the greenhouse gases) heats the surface of the Earth, and the energy is radiated back through the Earth's atmosphere as heat, with a longer wavelength. In the wavelengths 5-30µm a lot of this thermal radiation is absorbed by water vapour and carbon dioxide, which in turn radiate it, thus heating the atmosphere. This is what keeps the Earth habitable, - without the greenhouse effect overnight temperatures would plunge and the average surface temperature would be about minus 18oC, about the same as on the moon.

The particular problem arises in the 8-18µm band where water vapour is a weak absorber of radiation and where the Earth's thermal radiation is greatest. Part of this "window" (12.5-18µm) is largely blocked by carbon dioxide absorption, even at the low levels originally existing in the atmosphere. The remainder of the "window" coincides with the absorption proclivities of the other radiative gases: methane, (tropospheric) ozone, CFCs and nitrous oxide. It also appears that increased levels of carbon dioxide will increase the capture of heat in its absorption band to some, perhaps significant, extent.

The result of all this is that less heat is lost to space from the Earth's lower atmosphere, and temperatures at the Earth's surface are therefore likely to increase.>>

  7. I guess if you listen long enough without differentiating the source you can hear almost anything.
