"Do you have any friends?"

YES! My goodness! Just because I do my school at home doesn't mean I am home every hour of the day! My question to homeschoolers: Have you been asked this? My question to people who ask this: Why do you think this?

  1. I'm hoping some anti-homeschooler will answer this legitimately.  I would love to know why they ask this ridiculous question.

My kids haven't been asked this, but similar questions.  Like "How do you know you're learning anything?"  As if you don't know unless someone gives you a report card.  lol

I love how people claim to know homeschoolers and claim they never interact with anyone... but, how do they know them if the kids never get out?  The absurdity makes me laugh.

    :D

  2. I havent been asked this but there are even More annoying questions like "do Homeschoolers learn anything?" there are even some comments in questions like "homeschoolers do not socialize with anyone outside the home", that is not true there are more programs for homeschoolers then people think.

  3. I'm actually never asked this....

But it is true though, I have no friends, I'm alone, and depressed....

But it's not like anyone cares....

So, when you are asked that question, think of me, I'm the reason why that question is asked....

    =/

  4. Oh, yes. It's so common, that it's known as the "S" question.

I usually educate the questioner on the meaning of "social skills" and why shutting kids up all day with a group of people the same age and forcing them to learn things that do not hold their interest does not teach social skills.  Being out in the real world - homeschooling - does.

Unfortunately, teacher's unions have a lot at stake in keeping kids in schools.  Their livelihoods are on the line.  So they are at the forefront of the battle to spread hysteria about the myths regarding socialization and homeschooling.

  5. Yes, and I hate that question.

  6. I hate those questions. I always tell them to mind there own d**n business because no one asked for their 2 cents worth. I always tell them its OUR choice NOT THEIRS! He's OUR child, we know whats best for him.

And your right homeschooing isnt all about just being at home all the time. We go to the library, musuems, craft shows, feild trips all the time.

  7. I have to agree with you. Even though you do get taught at home, doesn't mean that you stay at home every minute of your life. It is the same for people who go to school. You don't really stay in the classroom all day. You still get to go outside to play with friends. You also can meet people at the mall or at church (sorry if you don't go to church). People who are home schooled have an equal amount of friends as the people who go to a school.

I actually go to a public school, but I do know what it feels like to be asked that question so many times. It can get REALLY annoying.

    KK =)

  8. Yes! That is a very annoying question that I am asked about my Grandchildren.  Four of my Grandchildren are schooled at home with no penalty of isolation.  They are all in sports.  They all go to church.  They participate in 4H.  They do a lot of fun stuff with other "home schoolers".

They definitely do not lack friends.  They are on the phone to their friends just a much as any popular teen who attends public school.

My Grandchildren are very well adjusted and popular home schooled kids.

    Thank You very much and

    Good Luck

  9. Yes, I know what you mean.  I have many friends.  My friends have been kids in the neighborhood who have ranged from all age groups.  Most of us are all very close, like a big family!

Many people who don't understand always  say,  "Doesn't homeschooling create issues with  social skills and no room for making friends" and... you know the drill.

But I guess I can't blame them.  They don't understand.  Most people come to the misconception  that  homeschooling parents  keep their  kids very close and sheltered.  But once they get to know me and understand what homeschooling is for my family they don't ask dumb questions anymore.
