The most consistent Vuelta performer Ezequiel Mosquera misses his chance at Vuelta a Espana 2011
According to the UCI report of September 20, 2011 Ezequiel Mosquera and his team-mate David Garcia Dapena tested positive for hydroxyethyl starch during the Vuelta a Espana, 2010. Mosquera who has finished the race amongst the top five cyclists in the previous
four Vueltas will be unfortunate to miss his chance at the Grand tour this year. Cyclist is disappointed mostly because this year he is lighter than he has even been before and was in a great shape to win the Vuelta a Espana, 2011.
He is hopeful that his name is cleared of the allegations so that he can continue the sport he loves as he stated, “I hope that it’s resolved soon because I don’t think there’s really much to argue about.”
Mosquera commented about using the hydroxyethyl as he stated that it is not a doping product and does not help to improve the performance by any means and that has already been clarified many a times before. He added that his samples were openly examined
and were sent to Germany without letting him know and still there were no traces of EPO.
Cyclist moved to the Dutch team Vacansoleil-DCM last year and has yet to make his first appearance with the team. It seems like the former Vuelta runner up will have to wait a little longer than he thought as his name is not yet cleared of the doping scandal.
Team Vacansoleil has made it clear that Mosquera will only be able to ride with the team after his name is cleared by the Spanish Cycling Federation and UCI. He supported the team’s decision as he understand their situation and commented that team has the
genuine reasons to come up with this decision and he has no other option but to stay with the team’s decision.
The 35-year-old shared his disappointment as he believes that UCI is taking longer than they should as he said, “It’s been 10 months since they informed me of the HES issue” he further added, “Honestly, I think I’ve become a bit of a martyr, but at least
it’s forced me to spend some time thinking about my life away from the bike and to enjoy being at home with my wife and my baby girl, who was born this year.”
Mosquera shared his disappointment on missing this year’s Vuelta and believes that he will not be able to participate in any event this year and has stopped training. He added that UCI has wasted 7 months without making any progress to his case and simply
forwarded the case to Spanish federation who has taken three more months without any progress to his case.
