The most egoistic cricketers-Part I
The dictionary defines ego as “an inflated feeling of pride in your superiority to others.” However, cricket is defined as a gentleman’s sport. So why is cricket and ego in the same sentence?
Well, because both the words share one thing amongst each other-the humble phenomena that is called “men.” Of course, a man is known for his ego. A man’s need to feel masculine and taking things in his own fragile hands is the underlying fact of cricket
as well. Even though there are many who argue that women are equally egoistic and they play cricket as well. But then again, cricket is not a “gentlewoman’s” game now, is it? So when England’s batsman Kevin Pietersen decided to bask in all the Ashes glory
and declared that he was the reason for England’s Ashes victory, it was his ego that burst out from the urn.
The world of sports has some very notable egos. Boxing legend Muhammad Ali being the leading egoistic man in sports once said “I’m handsome, I’m fast, I’m pretty, and can’t possibly be beat.” He sure was, yet he had an amusing, sometimes near-poetic swagger
around him. The self-proclaimed “best” players said about golf, “I’m the best, I just haven’t played yet.”
Cricket has its share of Mohammad Ali as well.
Kevin Pietersen
Of course, it just had to be him. His Twitter biography defines him as “husband, daddy, and proud English cricketer.” It sure is an “aww” moment but when he says things like if it weren’t for him; England might be burying their Ashes this year. He went one
step ahead and claimed that if he hadn’t sacrificed his position as a skipper, England could never have gotten rid of their old coach http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Peter-Moores-c81848.
Shane Warne affectionately called him as “the walking ego.” Warne might be his BFF (best friends forever), but even he admitted he does have an attitude that can rub people in the wrong way. The title sure fits him like a glove since his arrogance has contributed
to his downfall many a times. Especially after he smashed a 94 and then waited for the photographers to find his best angle.
Before the whole Ashes episode happened, Aussie bowler Doug Bollinger said that KP’s ego will cost him his wicket. But he was saved by his resilient teammates. And still Mr. Pietersen fails to acknowledge the team spirit that saved him from another mediocre
Ashes stint.
However, amidst the tattoos, the Liberty-X and the Lamborghinis, he has a heart of gold as shown by his current antic of helping the Australian flood victims. He might need the urn to be encrusted by diamonds, yet his bit to raise funds by auctioning his
Ashes-winning shirt and a bat is really sweet. He is even offering two tickets for the highest bidder to Perth to watch the last ODI between England and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 and that too, all expenses paid.
Maybe the IPL worked for him this year, as he was fetched for a mere $650,000 by Deccan Chargers.
