The most expensive contracts in Major League Baseball – Part 3
Number 9
Johan Santana was signed on by the New York Mets for 137.5-million-dollars for six years. Santana is a tremendous pitcher as he is a two time Cy Young Award winner. The Mets were expecting great things from him however the 2009 and 2010 seasons were plagued
with injuries and his performance plummeted. The Mets will be hoping that Santana can return to his full form so he could perform like he is supposed to, given the amount he gets paid.
Number 8
Without any argument, Todd Helton is one of the top hitters in baseball and also one the greatest players the Colorado Rockies have produced. In 2000 he had 147 RBIs and a .372 average, earning numerous awards. Before anyone else could get their hands on
him the Rockies signed him on for a good nine years, paying him 141.5-million-dollars. The Rockies have tremendous faith in the player as fearing that they might lose him when the contract finishes, Colorado have extended the contract for another two years.
Number 7
The Boston Red Sox managed to sign Carl Crawford to a seven year 172-million-dollar contract. Crawford is a talented player who is a four time All Star. Last year, he had a career high when he hit 19 homers, 90 RBIs, had a slugging percentage of .495 and
scored 110 runs. Crawford is a tremendous player and the Red Sox seem to be investing heavily for their future.
Number 6
Miguel Cabrera signed for 152.3-million-dollars for eight years as he plays for the Detroit Tigers. He has performed well since the signing of the contract. He is a tremendous player with unmatched abilities. The Tigers will be looking to Cabrera over the
next few years to guide them to many successful seasons.
Number 5
The Colorado Rockies offered Troy Tulowitzki a ten year 157.75-million-dollar contract. It seems that the Rockies are investing heavily in retaining key players for extended periods to build their team around. The team are looking to players like Tulowitzki
to help them in the potential future post-season play.
Number 4
The investment of 161-million-dollars on CC Sabathia for seven years by the New York Yankees was definitely a wise one. He won the American League Cy Young Award in 2007 and was a crucial part of the team that helped the Bronx Bombers win the World Series
in 2009.
Number 3
The Yankees literally yanked Mark Teixeira from everyone’s watch in December 2008. They signed him on for a good eight years paying him 180-million-dollars. It seems to be a wise investment given the fact that he has put in memorable performances for the
team during both the regular and post-season play.
Number 2
Teams like the Minnesota Twins do not spend money on their players like the extravagant Yankees but if they do then that player has to be absolutely worth it. The Twins spent an amount on Joe Mauer which was way out of their league, 184-million-dollars for
eight years. Mauer has lived up to the expectations and has proved himself to be worth the money.
Number 1
Of course the highest paid player in all of MLB has to be a Yankee. Considering the amount they spend on their players it would be a shame if someone else took the top spot. Alex Rodriguez is going to earn massive 275-million-dollars for 10 seasons with
the Yankees. This is the biggest contract in MLB history. Rodriguez has had many ups and downs during the past few years. It will be interesting to see if he was worth the exorbitant price tag.
