  1. Islam's not supposed to have any, but does.

    In battle they used either a green flag, or a black flag.

    Later the crescent moon, usually accompanied by a star appears on a number of flags (see this site for a gallery of them http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gallery_of_... The crescent can also appear atop a mosque's dome.

    Many young Moslem men in this country wear a pendant shaped like a thick curved sword (Shamshir).

The Crescent moon for the ancient god allah and the start for his wife the star goddess.  These are the original deity that my great x 45th grandfather Mohammad chose as the chief deities in his "new religion".  Later he kept the star symbol, but dropped the female part of his "godhead" in order to attract more of he woman hating locals.
