The most flabbergasting sports of the world
There are plenty of unusual sports that may seem bizarre at first glance but they appear to be loved by their hardcore supporters. The mainstream sports may seem “unusual” to them, for instance in football 11 players running after a single ball may seem
bizarre to them!
The following sports have their own set of rules and regulations and special equipment which includes unimaginable accessories ranging from food items to facial hair.
Cheese rolling
This sport is also called Cheese chasing competition in which a wheel of cheese weighing about three to four kilogram is rolled down the top of a hill. In the last weekend of May every year, spectators and “players” gather at the dangerously steep Cooper’s
Hill in Gloucester, England. When the cheese is rolled down, dozens of competitors run down the hill- stumbling and injuring in some cases as well, chasing blindly the wheel of cheese. The cheese can travel at 30 miles per hour and the participants need to
match up the speed. The first individual who manages to reach the finishing line and nab the cheese is the winner. The individual will have broken limbs along with some injuries and 15 or so minutes of fame. Oh and they also get to keep the cheese. In 1997,
the cheese took a sharp turn towards the spectators and injured one of them. Ultimately, the competition is to find who is faster – the player or the cheese.
Man vs. horse racing
There are many races which involve humans, animals, humans and animals; so why not invent a sport that makes human beings compete with animals. The man versus horse marathon takes place in a Welsh town every year in June. The inspiration for inventing such
a sport came to a local landlord in 1980 when he overheard a discussion between two men debating about whether an individual can beat a horse in a race. The course for the race is laid out on almost 22 miles and the contestants have to test their strength
while overcoming hurdles as the terrain is not smooth. There are many natural obstacles such as steep slopes and rivers. If an individual beats the horse to the finish line, they get the prize. In its 30- year’s history, only once an individual has beaten
a horse claiming a huge cash price of £25,000.
Octopush
It is similar to hockey but come with a twist - it is played underwater. Also known as underwater hockey, the game is a non-contact sport in which two teams compete against each other to tactfully manage a puck to make goals with a hockey stick. The game
has become very popular in Australia, UK, New Zealand and South Africa.
Chess boxing
This unique blend of brain and brawn is a competition of chess and boxing with the two games being alternating after each round. This sport is between two individuals which last up to a total of 11 rounds, with a four minute chess round followed by a two
minute boxing round. World Chess Boxing Organization conducts the event and they believe that fighting is done in the ring whereas wars are waged on the board. The first championship was held in Amsterdam in 2003. Now the sport has expanded to other European
countries as well having their own annual European Chess Boxing Championship.
Beard and moustache championship
Moustaches and beards are considered to be a sign of maturity and masculinity in men. The world beard and moustache championship is a competition taking place all around the world where men show elaborate and exceptionally unique facial hair. The event takes
place every two years. The first competition was held in 1990 in Germany. There are three main categories namely moustache, full beards and partial beards. Within these categories, different styles are awarded. There is also a freestyle category of facial
hair. The prizes might be negligible but the amount of esteem it provides the men cannot be denied.
It cannot be overlooked that world over people look for ways to ward off boredom or to find some form of entertainment. Several sports and games still exist that might not have gotten mainstream sports status but are loved and played with the same enthusiasm
as cricket and football.
