Question:

The most interesting route to take driving across Canada?

I'm driving from Alberta to Nova Scotia at the end of May with a friend. I've done it before heading east to west (by myself that time) and went through Canada. It was beautiful at times, deadly boring at other times.

I'm wondering if anyone has gone through the US and what it was like and what route they took. For example, all the way through the US until Maine or get back up into Canada in southern Ontario?

My first concern is which route will be the most interesting; time isnt as much of a concern as interest - we're looking to make this a fun, memorable roadtrip.

So any and all thoughts are appreciated - like if the US has cheaper gas? More traffic jams? Less moose? I am moving so I'll have stuff in my car and was also concerned about border problems?

Thanks!

  1. I've been both ways the US under lake Superior and the Canadian way over the lake from Sudbury ON to Regina Sask.  I have to say the US route is a little more interesting being that there is  a LOT less trees and bush and rocks.

But being that you are going to be moving your stuff it would be wiser to take the Canadian route.  I would stick to highway #17 rather than the other route of highway #11 through northern Ontario.  BTW make sure you have a full tank of gas when heading out of the Sault

  2. Assuming you start in Calgary

    1. Take Highway 1 east to Ontario

    2. Highway 1 turns to Highway 17, continue east

    3. Highway 17 turns to Highway 417, continue east

    4. Autroute 40 to Montreal Island, take Autroute 15 south to connect with Autoroute 20

    5. Autoroute 20 east to Quebec Highway 185

    6. Hwy 185 turns to Highway 2 in New Brunswick

    7. Take Highway 2 until NS, when it turns to Highway 104.
