  1. c.  C.S.S. Alabama

  2. C. The Alabama was a commerce raider which destroyed or captured over 41 ships. She was destroyed in 1864. I think the others may not be able to compare.

        Hope that helps.

         Packers.

  3. The Alabama.

Merrimack mentioned by one answer was the name of the ship that was burned to the water line and later re-floated and armor plated.

The Hunley was the first submarine IN HISTORY to sink an enemy vessel in time of war.

  4. It was the Alabama

  5. None of the above!  The most successful Conf. vessel, in terms of the damage it wrought, was the very first ironclad naval ship; the Merrimack.

(It was wooden, but had iron armor.)  The remains of it - the ship is famous for fighting the Union's first ironclad, the Monitor, to a draw - was found in 2003, as noted here:

  6. the C.S.S. Sooooweee!

  7. The CSS Hunley was a propeller submarine that sunk the USS Housatonic thus becomming the first submarine to sink a warship.

The CSS Virginia was the Confederate ironclad  which before being burnt and scuttled by the Union Navy at the evacuation of Gosport Naval shipyard was the sloop of war Merrimac. The Virginia sunk the Congress and Cumberland in her initial attempt to raise the blockade. The next day the Erickson Monitor arrived and battled the Virginia to a draw. Thus the Virginia failed in it's strategic objective that of raising the blockade. This battle of ironclads doomed the wooden navies of the world.

The CSS Arkansas was a huge ironclad ram that was finally ready for battle during the Vicksburg Campaign of 62-63. She fought the USS Carondelet (ironclad) the USS Tyler a (timberclad )and the USS Queen of the West a wooden ram in the Yazoo river above Vicksburg. She severely damaged the Carrondelet then fought her way through Admiral Faragutt's fleet of some 30+ ships before finding shelter under the Guns of Vicksburg.

As previously mentioned the CSS Alabama was a high seas commerce raider commanded by Raphael Semmes. Alabama destroyed some 60+ vessels untill she was destroyed in battle of Cherbourg, France by the USS Kearsage.

Neither the Virginia nor the monitor were the first U S ironclads but their battle was the first between ironclads. The city class gunboats (ironclads) actually saw some combat before these two ships met. The USS Michigan was the first iron hulled warship and served out the Civil War on the Great Lakes. She guarded the confederate POW camp on Johnson Island in Lake Erie

  8. D, C.S.S Virginia

  9. I would say C based on the following:

The work of the CSS Alabama, CSS Florida, and CSS Shenandoah shows the actual implementation of the first objective. These three ships probably did more than any other Confederate ships to terrorize the Union merchants; in fact, they came close to driving Union commerce from the high seas.
