  1. Man in the Iron Mask was a real person. In 1698 a mysterious man was imprisoned in the Bastille. Almost no one seemed to know who he was, although residents of the French prison were usually important people who had fallen out of favor with King Louis XIV. This man had been a captive of the government since at least 1687, and for all that time his face had been hidden by a mask.

  2. The movie is based on a fictional book.  There are stories of a man in an Iron Mask in the Bastille, but there's no evidence at all to suggest that person was royalty or that there was a royal brother no one knew about.

  3. Supposedly there truly was a man in the iron mask. Nowadays nobody knows the true identity of the man and throughout the history - almost from the time the man in the iron mask first appeared - there were rumours that he was a twin brother or at least a brother of the king who ruled France at the time.

The made-up story is the musketeers saving the man and putting his brother in prison and forcing him to wear the iron mask.

  4. It's supposed to be based partly on history. It started as an explanation of why Louis was such a creep in the beginning and then became one of France's most beloved kings.

Kinda makes sense, and either way, it's a great story.

  5. It was not a true story.  Just written by a director.
