  1. ann or anna

  2. This is what www.ancestry.com has to say about the name,

    Annabel

English: sometimes taken as an elaboration of Anna, but more probably a dissimilated form of Amabel. It has been common in Scotland since the 12th century (often being used as an Anglicized form of Gaelic Barabal; see Barbara) and in the rest of the English-speaking world since the 1940s. Variants: Annabella (Latinized); Annabelle (Gallicized, under the influence of Belle).

    hope this helps.

  3. I think we all take for granted today that "Annabel" is a combination of "Anna" and "Belle."  However, all three name dictionaries that I consulted (at least one of which  points out that "Annabel" was popular in the British Isles when "Anne" was rarely used)  say that it's more likely to be a "dissimilated" form of "Amabel," the medieval name that evolved into "Mabel."   In that case, it means "lovable."

Another name dictionary that I saw years ago suggested that it was a feminine form of "Hannibal."  I think  I'd go with the "Mabel" explanation.

In any case, the likelihood that the name isn't rel;ated to "Anne" shouldn't prevent any Annabel who wants to  call herself  "Annie" from doing so.  I know one Andrea who is called Annie, and there's definitely no real connection between those names.

  4. Annabel is a nice name for a girl. It is still cute and somewhat unique without being bizarre, and I don't think it has gotten to that overused stage yet.

Nicknames might include Ann, Anna or Ana, Annie, Bel (Belle) or Bella just from the name itself.

You might come up with other nicknames based upon middle initial (like AJ for Annabel Jennifer) or personality traits or other characteristics.

Your name and what you are called are often two vastly different things and will develop over time. For instance, boys named James are often called Jimmy or Jamie as boys, but as they grow up, may prefer just Jim or James.
