  1. First ,  (sorry to dispell the myth)  Golf is not an acronym.  that is an old wives tale or whatever......The word golf was first mentioned in writing in 1457 on a Scottish statute on forbidden games as gouf,[possibly derived from the Scots word goulf (variously spelled) meaning "to strike or cuff". This word may, in turn, be derived from the Dutch word kolf, meaning "bat," or "club," and the Dutch sport of the same name.

  2. Gentlemen Only. Ladies F off.

  3. You are wrong, it is not an acronym for Gentlemen Only, Ladies Forbidden.  That is an old myth and there is no truth behind it.

  4. the legend is that its Gentelmen Only Ladies Forbiden, but that is an urban legend.

  5. Legend has it that golf stands for gentlemen only, ladies forbidden - an original rule of the game.

  6. GOLF.........Gentleman only, Ladies Forbidden. That was the original meaning when it first came about.

  7. I always thought it was Gentlemen Only Ladies Forbidden, and I bet alot of people who don't play golf wouldn't know this.

hmmmm......if your a pub quiz person, this could be useful

  8. The acronym GOLF does not stand for anything but the game of golf. Someone made up the "Gentlemen Only Ladies Forbidden", somewhere along the way and it was cute so it stuck.

  9. How about the simplest reason for anyone who has played for awhile, it's just an acronym for "flog" spelled backwards.......as in why in the world do we do this to ourselves.... :)

  10. I always assumed they called it golf because fu*k was taken
