  1. Many people on this forum who have male rats have said that their rats aren't smelly.  You might want to wait until you get the rats (hopefully you're getting two, as rats are highly sociable creatures and really need a buddy to hang out with) to see if you think the scent marking is really a big deal.

I'm not sure how much my local vet charges, but to have a small tumor removed from my rat cost over $200.  Since neutering is not that much different, I would think it would be a similar cost.  If you are really that interested, you should call around to your local vets to get some estimates.

If you haven't purchased your rats yet, please consider adopting a couple from your local humane society.  Sometimes they have rats and when they do, it's usually many months before they get adopted.  Additionally, the money you spend at the shelter gets applied towards saving other animals.

    Hope that helps!

  2. Neutering may or may not stop the ''marking'', and it's really nothing to make a big issue out of it, as it's just small droplets of urine that can easily be cleaned up by Kleenex. :)

Anyways, cost will vary based on your location & clinic. My clinic is wonderful when it comes to ''rat sizing'' prices, and they quoted $65 for neutering.

I have 2 male rats, neither are neutered because they haven't given me a reason to do so (no fighting over the females, no aggression, etc.)
