The new untraceable versions of EPO are still used by cyclists, Benedetto Roberti
It seems as if the prolonged saga of doping in the sport of cycling is not going to finish that easy, after the Italian judge Benedetto Roberti revealed that doping is still ongoing in cycling at all levels of the sport.
He told Tuttobici magazine that new untraceable versions of EPO are being used by cyclists at amateur, professional and even at Grand Fondo categories of the sport to achieve the desired results.
Benedetto provided important proof against Dr. Michele Ferrari and several other cyclists that used doping previously in their career which helped USADA in bringing Lance Armstrong down to the count.
The American used undetectable doping substance and kept on fooling the system for over a decade.
He was tested several times throughout the career managed to fool the UCI every single time and kept on winning.
Armstrong managed to bag a total number of seven overall victories at the Tour de France and became a cycling icon, involving doctors, teammates and associates to pull-off one of the biggest scam in history of the sports.
Roberti also stated that people normally have a soft corner for the cyclists, which is wrong as it is the riders themselves who are responsible for using the UCI prohibited substance to enhance their performance.
He told the magazine that the sport is seariously filled with cheaters and things are not looking good in the future.
“We're dealing with scruple-less people who inject themselves with everything, without knowing what they're doing: products stolen from hospitals, from Eastern countries without any guarantees on the quality".
“There's also AICAR that is brought in from the East as a powder and is apparently a kind of genetic doping. In simple terms, it helps reset muscle fibres after huge efforts. It can't be found in anti-doping tests either".
"So have things improved? Has sport and especially cycling really taken a new direction? I say no and whoever says the opposite doesn't love our sport".
It is only the matter of time, before UCI finds out about the new doping products and it will be interesting to see, how the sports organising body responds to the situation in order to prevent the sport from any future damages.
