Question:

The nightmare of HD?

Being of a 'certain age' and mesmerised by the plethora of information about the impending HD era, I would like some informed information. I have three analogue TV's and one Freeview box.

HD that happend here later this year will only be available if the correct equipment is installed.

FROM UNBIASED AND QUALIFIED TV PEOPLE ONLY I would appreciate a solution to my up and coming situation.

  1. You are confused.

"HD that happend here later this year"... What?

When they switch off analogue you will *need* a Freeview box. You'll be fine.

If you want to get the HD stuff you'll need Freesat or the free Sky service, and an HD box and HD TV.

  2. I am certainly unbiased, but not 'qualified'!

I can tell you this for sure, you are getting mixed up with digital and HD.

When the time comes for your area to go digital, you will need your free view box, thats all.

                                          Now onto the mystic HD!

In the UK we dont have HD except on sky and they will sell you a little black box for around £300 plus an increase in subscription of around £10 a month on top of your present subscription!

Another point of interest (and one you may try to check out for your self)  find a TV shop that will actually show you a HD programme working.

It took me ages to fathom it all out, I eventually found a shop that could show me a HD programme up and running, the picture was just slightly better than mine, but for £300 they could stuff it!

You have the same problem I had! Too much information,m and far too much BS!

Just check out my basic 'unqualified' info, it will make sense.

  3. Most new TV's you buy these days are HD ready....make sure it is...there will be a sticker somewhere on the set....to receive HD you need a set top box....not the normal freeview....but they cost a bit....if it was me, I would buy an HD ready TV, but just use it with the freeview box and wait until the HD service is more extensive and cheaper.....all the UK will eventually over the next three years change to digital signals only....but I think you can still use your analogue tv,, ut they need to all connect to a digital freeview type set top box....most new tv's have the digital 'box' built in...but these cost a bit more....your local TV dealer should be able to help,, but basically when they turn the analogue signal off, you will only be able to receive a signal via a set top box.

  4. You will need a set top box for each analogue TV in your house, it's a digital switchover, not HD.

Tall Paul is almost correct about HD.

If you want to go HD you will need an HD TV (of course) and either a Freesat HD receiver and dish, about £150+installation or Virgin HD, don't know how much that is, or Sky HD which is currently anywhere between £199 and £299 depending on the package bought +installation and subscription,  but is rumoured to be coming down in price within the next 3-4 weeks.
