  1. Incorrect. Each state on the Security Council has one vote, and one vote only. Additionally, only the permanent five members (the United States of America, the United Kingdom of Great Britain & Northern Ireland, the French Republic, Russia, and the People's Republic of China) have vetoes on the UNSC. Thus, the second-largest country in the world by population (India) has no permanent seat on the Council, and no veto when it is one of the ten other, rotating members, and its vote carries no more weight than, say, Luxembourg, whose population is far smaller.

The rotating members are elected by the General Assembly, with half being elected every year. At any given time, 3 rotating members will be African states, two will be Asian, two will be Western European (or Australia, New Zealand, Turkey, Israel, or Canada), two will be from Latin America, and one will be from Eastern Europe. One of the African or Asian choices must be an Arab state.

Any serious matter before the UNSC requires 9 affirmative votes, and no vetoes.

There have been many complaints, esp. from the developing world, about the Security Council's makeup and biases. For a longer discussion of this, see this Yahoo Answers question: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;...

  2. Every nation gets just one vote....  If it was based on population, China will probably out-vote everybody any day!

To assign the number of votes based on population is not a good idea since there is only one UN representative for each nation, it is likely that he will throw all the eggs in one bag to ensure the motion/resolution he supported gets through.

Check the rules in the link below...

  3. The UN Security Council is made up of 15 member states, consisting of five permanent seats and ten temporary seats. The permanent five are China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States owing for their participation during WW2. These members hold veto power over substantive but not procedural resolutions allowing a permanent member to block adoption but not debate of a resolution unacceptable to it.

The ten temporary seats are held for two-year terms with member states voted in by the UN General Assembly on a regional basis. The Presidency of the Security Council is rotated alphabetically each month.

The lack of true international representation in the United Nations Security Council, as exists in the General Assembly, has led to accusations that the UNSC only addresses the strategic interests and political motives of the permanent members, especially in humanitarian interventions.

  4. Why not just make israel in charge of the entire global community and let them have a free hand plundering every resource worldwide? Why hold back any longer, just succumb!
